Welcome to The Catholic Minute.
Why do Catholics have saints? Aren't all Christians saints?
Catholics entirely agree with Protestants that all Christians are saints. After all, it's completely biblical. The Catholic catechism states, "The communion of saints is the Church."
However, words can have more than one meaning. In English, we refer to all men politely as "Sir" but it also has a more specific meaning which applies only to men who have been knighted. Likewise, Catholics use the word Saint in two ways. First, to refer to all Christians and, second, to designate people who are outstanding examples for us to imitate.
There are myriad opinions about how to live a Christian life. Some are helpful and some are dangerously unhelpful. The Church points out particular Saints to help us cut through the confusion and see practical examples of Christianity in action. The saints do not replace Jesus, they show Jesus working through fellow human beings.
